How to and where to add custom head code into header

How to and where to add custom head code into header

I have looked in the header template on the default theme and I cannot seem to find where I would be able to add custom meta tags into my themes header.  

Basically what I am trying to accomplish is adding fav icon code into the header without using a plugin. Any one know?
